Ambassador His Excellency Omar Abdul Razzak met with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland QC this morning.
The meeting was held at a gathering hosted by the Secretary General for Commonwealth High Commissioners based in Sri Lanka. During the meeting, the Ambassador conveyed that the Maldivians are eagerly waiting to rejoin the Commonwealth and reiterated the government’s commitment to promote and uphold the ideals of the Commonwealth.
Following the formal request made to the Commonwealth by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December 2018, the Commonwealth first conducted an assessment visit to the Maldives in January 2019, followed by an elections observer mission in April 2019. Foreign Minister His Excellency Abdulla Shahid also met with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in June 2019, when the Maldives submitted the required documents requested by the Commonwealth Secretariat as part of the due process under the Kampala Communique.
Commonwealths’ Second Assessment Mission visited the Maldives in August this year to engage with important domestic stakeholders to assess the Maldives’ application to rejoin the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General arrived in Sri Lanka to participate in the Commonwealth Law Ministers’ meeting in Colombo. The Commonwealth Law Ministers’ Meeting (CLMM) will be taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 4 to 7 November 2019.
